African banking has leapt ahead before. Mobile money, USSD and digital wallets reached millions of customers that branches never did. Banking is now moving from digital channels, where the customer does the work, to agentic banking, where AI agents act for customers and staff and finish whole journeys from end to end. For banks in Angola and across the region, this is a strategic opening. Institutions that are still modernising may be able to skip whole stages of the digital journey and build agent-ready foundations from the start. The risk is adding AI on top of broken journeys and old systems, which only automates the friction customers already feel. Senior banking leaders and Backbase discuss what agentic banking means for the next five years.
