{"id":378907,"date":"2025-11-20T17:11:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T16:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/?p=378907"},"modified":"2025-11-21T15:53:59","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T14:53:59","slug":"where-is-africas-financial-industry-headed-six-early-afis-deloitte-barometer-insights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/en\/where-is-africas-financial-industry-headed-six-early-afis-deloitte-barometer-insights\/","title":{"rendered":"Where is Africa\u2019s financial industry headed? \u2013 Six early AFIS-Deloitte Barometer insights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-96faa70d4eacfcd0b1e541ae334cf0d5\"><strong>Initial findings from the upcoming African Financial Industry Barometer reveal where hundreds of Africa\u2019s banking, fintech, and capital markets executives see AI having the biggest potential impact &#8211; and the regulatory gaps they want addressed most urgently.<br><br><\/strong>The Barometer co-authors, Deloitte and AFIS, unveiled preliminary findings of the 5<sup>th<\/sup> edition of the Barometer at AFIS 2025 in Casablanca on 3 November.<br><br>The annual survey, conducted between May and September 2025, captures the views of senior executives across banking, insurance, fintech, and capital markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1fde5e991527c91ca6f677eb1973ca72\">The full report \u2013 due to be published in January 2026 &#8211; sheds light on how the sector is navigating AI, advancing sustainable finance, and whether financial inclusion is truly seen as a business priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-75bf97b461cc55be44eb9b02a96836be\">Initial results point to six key trends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1 &#8211; Financial leaders see brighter outlook for their own firms<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-378921\" style=\"width:265px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bd21af784c1d10248ee6c8c19386ce48\">African financial executives rated the economic prospects of their own organisations over the next three years at 8 out of 10, a rise of 0.72 points from 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8f498eccc3f8204fe87039db0db2447d\">Seventy-four per cent reported a positive outlook and only 4% a negative one, supported by stronger turnover and easing inflation.<br><br>Pan-African institutions were the most confident, giving their three-year prospects a score of 8.11 out of 10, led by commercial banks. International players were less assured at 7.45, down 0.66%, while capital-market respondents were markedly more cautious at 6.50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f8b6822bf19de0791ef4288c510eed0d\">Speaking at AFIS 2025, Frederic Maury, Deputy CEO \u2013 Events at Jeune Afrique Media Group, the company behind AFIS, said that despite the optimism \u201c<em>there are two main hurdles at play here\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e3ddebe040aa39616b64135af363baf5\"><em>\u201cFirst, the volatility of our capital markets, which is still heavily influenced by foreign investment flows. And second, our regulatory framework, which needs further refinement despite the monetary policies already in place to drive convergence,\u201d <\/em>he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2 &#8211;<\/strong> <strong>Concerns on talent shortages easing<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-1-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-378934\" style=\"width:238px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AFIS-25-post-decompte-1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1414814ee41544908937c4dc84c90ec2\">Pressure on talent is showing signs of relief. Only 30% of respondents flagged talent shortages and recruitment challenges as their main concerns at present, a decline compared to last year\u2019s Barometer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-727201652b2bcb1af1d045ee4bc80a7b\">Ziad Baddou, Director of Deloitte Consulting Morocco said: <em>\u201cSince the start of this Barometer \u2014 now in its 5th edition with Deloitte \u2014 talent pressure has always ranked very high.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-952164c6ab2be40c6b0107315fe892cd\"><em>\u201cThis year it remains high, but it has decreased. We feel that the financial industry has invested heavily in talent in recent years, and these investments are now paying off, reducing stress around recruitment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a870da68daceef0bf05cb38ae3ea1cb9\">He added that Artificial Intelligence and to some extent the return of the diaspora has also lightened the burden on recruitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3 &#8211;<\/strong> <strong>Financial inclusion \u2018not a priority\u2019 for more than a third of respondents<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"515\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Financial-inclusion.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-378939\" style=\"width:298px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Financial-inclusion.png 515w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Financial-inclusion-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c4cd378ecde55d69a05fceb04201ab21\">Scaling up access to financial products was not a priority for 43% of industry leaders surveyed. But results varied considerably depending on the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-51432edb9bbbb9cc1afd414041b418ce\">Eighty-four per cent of fintechs consider financial inclusion strategic or an area for development. Though results among bankers and insurers were more mixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-83ae733d63e65bd28e18bd7124e0fe84\"><em>\u201cAmong banks, it is mainly international groups that see this as an \u2018obligation\u2019 rather than a priority,\u201d<\/em> said Frederic Maury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-600f18820b3241bebd52f384190eb795\"><em>\u201cIn general, the current \u2018back to basics\u2019 trend is pushing bankers to focus on operational efficiency rather than inclusion, which is seen as much as a growth area as a regulatory\/CSR obligation,\u201d <\/em>he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-410e452c561a8cf7dbd01ac3066fe9c0\">For financial firms prioritising financial inclusion, improved digital infrastructure and interoperable financial systems are seen as the keys to expanding access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4 &#8211;<\/strong> <strong>AI\u2019s main role in African finance will be to sniff out fraud<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-26ab8d4df78383792656d49458148e81\">AI adoption is surging across Africa\u2019s financial sector, with executives saying its biggest impact over the next three years will be in fraud detection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-edd1b8cc679609e3c80bd35ed48e2e45\">The survey found that commercial banks are mainly deploying AI to analyse operational, credit and market risks; Insurers are prioritising AI for customer acquisition, while fintechs use cases are focused on automating services and operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Test5-1024x409.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-378950\" style=\"width:581px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Test5-1024x409.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Test5-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Test5-768x307.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Test5.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cd534ddcd65f448748a2537476206b1a\">Deloitte\u2019s Ziad Baddou said that despite the rise in AI, stumbling blocks prevent the technology from being deployed more broadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-44e95c67298b67092a3032aa2d42494d\"><em>\u201cOne major barrier is the still-limited use of cloud technologies, which restricts the scope of what is possible.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5c621990a0f1c0fa4ea8b1e930c43e30\"><em>\u201cThe second is data \u2014 classification, use, and collection must become more efficient to broaden the field of possible applications. The third is regulation, which must evolve in the coming years to support the expansion and growth of AI use cases in the financial sector.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5 &#8211; Regulatory reform needed for data protection &amp; cybersecurity standards<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"412\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Graphic3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-378954\" style=\"width:278px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Graphic3.jpg 412w, https:\/\/www.afis.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Graphic3-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-67c209a387cc9f7b9ef9b19c9ea8006c\">Executives flagged \u2018data protection and cybersecurity standards\u2019 as the most urgent regulatory reform to support Africa\u2019s financial sector.<br><br><em>\u201cCybersecurity is now the subject of massive investment and an area where the industry is calling for more regulation and a clearer legal framework,\u201d<\/em> said Frederic Maury.<br><br>He added that the survey indicated longer-term structural challenges in need of regulatory attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a76250f529c664a54071eabb1707f680\"><em>\u201cOne is interoperability,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201c<em>There are hundreds of millions of mobile money accounts across Africa, and interoperability remains a real challenge. Initiatives exist, but the industry is impatient to see progress accelerate, as this would be a genuine game changer for African finance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Gender parity advances, women-focused products lag<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-73993a67206c6e0a5d766322a0646643\">Forty-seven per cent of respondents said workforce gender parity policies are fully implemented, with a further 37% planning deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d49c24021d1400aa96e6d1760687342a\"><em>\u201cOn gender parity, what we observe across the continent is that policies are making substantial progress, particularly on parity itself.
